Keystone Launches “Propane With Purpose” to Help Eliminate School Lunch Debt in Rural Communities

Aug 11, 2025

Keystone Cooperative is proud to announce the launch of its new charitable initiative, Propane with Purpose, a program dedicated to strengthening food security by helping eliminate school lunch debt in rural communities.

Throughout the 2025–2026 school year, Keystone will donate $0.50 for every propane delivery stop to the Keystone Charitable Foundation. These contributions will directly support efforts to reduce school lunch debt in local schools, because small acts of generosity can lead to meaningful change. Keystone’s goal is to raise $150,000 by the end of the school year.

To raise awareness, four specially branded delivery trucks will travel across Keystone’s propane regions, serving as mobile ambassadors for the cause. While only four trucks will carry the Propane with Purpose branding, every propane delivery across Keystone’s trade territory will count toward the $150,000 goal.

At the conclusion of the school year, Keystone will identify the schools that will receive funding. Both Keystone employees and the general public are encouraged to nominate schools in need. Selection criteria will include enrollment size, the percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch, and the school’s current lunch debt.

“Propane with Purpose reflects our deep commitment to the communities we serve,” said Mike Hayden, Assistant Vice President of Propane at Keystone Cooperative. “We believe no child should have to worry about their next meal, especially at school, and this initiative is one way we can help ensure that.”

Keystone’s propane business serves a wide range of customers—from nearly 80,000 residential heating accounts to commercial enterprises, municipalities, and even school transportation fleets. What sets Keystone apart is its commitment to local service and an unwavering focus on safety. Now, by simply choosing Keystone as their propane provider, customers are also playing a direct role in supporting the company’s mission to combat food insecurity in their own communities.

“Propane with Purpose is a reflection of who we are as a cooperative—neighbors helping neighbors,” said Lindsay Sankey, Director of Public Relations at Keystone Cooperative. “By turning everyday deliveries into meaningful contributions, we’re not only fueling homes, businesses and farms, but also delivering relief for families who need it most.”

Keystone encourages the public to nominate their school in need. To nominate a school in your community, complete the form here: https://forms.keystonecoop.com/251393184003046
